She has appeared on the cover of Italy’s Muse magazine and the British Telegraph Magazine. Also, more recently she was on the cover of Russian Vogue in February 2007.

Round-faced, red-cheeked, hazel-eyed and athletic, she was young enough to pose as a lip-chewing schoolgirl and old enough to made up in the usual outlandish outfits for an appearance in Velvet magazine in June 2007.

Selita Ebanks

Selita Ebanks was born on 15 February 1983 in George Town, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, a British Overseas Territory. She was raised in a large family that includes seven brothers. Influenced by her brothers, Ebanks played many sports growing up, such as basketball, soccer and tennis. Her family, her mother in particular, encouraged her development through extracurricular programs.

Ebanks moved to the United States, and settled in Staten Island, New York. After moving to New York City she was accepted at Spelman College, Columbia University, and New York University.

At 17 years old, while walking through the turnstiles at Six Flags Great Adventure, Ebanks was scouted by an agent from Elite Model Management.^[3][4] Ebanks worked with some of the world’s most noted photographers, including Peter Lindbergh, Bruce Weber, Steven Klein, Carter Smith and Mikael Jansson, and for some of the most quintessential American fashion campaigns, including Ralph Lauren, Abercrombie & Fitch, Levi’s and Tommy Hilfiger.

Ebanks first modeled for Victoria’s Secret for their Ipex Bra line, before being signed as an Angel. She and Izabel Goulart made their major débuts in the 2005 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, working as an Angel until early 2009. In 2005, Tyra Banks said she was proud of Ebanks to be representing for black women at Victoria’s Secret.

Ebanks made a special guest appearance on How I Met Your Mother (episode: «The Yips») on 26 November 2007 with her fellow Victoria’s Secret supermodels (Miranda Kerr, Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima, Marisa Miller, and Alessandra Ambrosio).

Maria Izabel Goulart Dourado

Goulart was born on October 23, 1984 in São Carlos, São Paulo, Brazil. She is of Italian and French descent and has four brothers and one sister. Goulart once said «the hardest part about being an Angel is I spend time away from my mom’s food and away from my home with my five brothers and sister.«  School was a particularly rough time for Goulart, as she was made fun of for her skinny build, and was even called names such as «giraffe».

While shopping for groceries with her mother at age 14, a hairstylist suggested that she should become a model. She moved to the state’s capital São Paulo and started modeling.

During Goulart’s first ever fashion show appearance, she experienced a wardrobe malfunction when her top fell open. The unfortunate incident made many Brazilian newspapers and remains her most embarrassing moment. She was able to put her rocky start behind her and returned to the runway to model collections for A-list designers such as Bill Blass, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Oscar de la Renta, Valentino, Jil Sander, Chanel, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren and Stella McCartney, among many others. Goulart has also modeled for H&M, Express, Neiman Marcus, Missoni and Dsquared.

She first appeared in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 2005, the year she was contracted as an Angel. Although she is no longer an Angel, Goulart walked in the 2008 and 2009 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows. She has shot for top photographers such as Terry Richardson, David Sims, Greg Kadel, and Vincent Peters for such publications as French and Japanese Vogue, French magazine, and Numero. She was replaced by Rianne ten Haken as the face of Armani Exchange. Goulart can be seen in the fall 2009 H&M campaign.

Goulart was reportedly engaged to businessman Marcelo Costa on August 2006. Although she mentioned being single during a February 2008 interview on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, she stated she was still with Costa in an interview for GQ Italia, November 2009.

Goulart, whose brother has type 1 diabetes, does charitable work, helping hospitals in her native Brazil to raise money to provide free insulin for diabetic children in need. She also has taken an active role with the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) at the University of Miami, a recognized leader in cure-focused research. In 2009, Goulart became the DRI’s international ambassador and in that role helps to promote the work of the DRI throughout her travels.

Karolína Isela Kurková

Karolína Kurková was born in Děčín, Czechoslovakia, to Josef Kurka, a Czech basketball player, and a Slovak mother. While Kurková was young, she was made fun of for her height. But after a friend sent photos of Kurková to an agency in Prague, she – at 15 – landed a runway appearance, as well as a commercial and print advertising. She later traveled to Milan to gain more experience and signed a modeling contract with Miuccia Prada.

In September 1999, Kurková appeared in the American edition of fashion and lifestyle magazine Vogue, and after moving to New York City at the age of 17, graced the cover of the February 2001 edition, becoming one of the youngest models ever to appear on the magazine’s cover.

Gisele Caroline Bündchen

Bündchen was born in the Brazilian town of Três de Maio and grew up in Horizontina, Rio Grande do Sul. She is of German descent from both her parents, Vânia Nonnenmacher, a bank clerk pensioner, and Valdir Bündchen, a university teacher and writer. She has five sisters — Raquel, Graziela, Gabriela, Rafaela and her fraternal twin Patrícia, Gisele’s junior by five minutes. Bündchen is Roman Catholic and speaks Portuguese as her native language. She also speaks Spanish and English.

Originally, Bündchen wanted to be a professional volleyball player and considered playing for the Brazilian team, Sogipa. While in school, Bündchen was so thin that her friends used to call her «Olívia Palito» (Portuguese for Olive Oyl, Popeye’s skinny girlfriend and «Saracura» (a type of Brazilian shorebird).

In 1993, a then-13-year-old Bündchen joined a modeling course with her sisters Patrícia and Gabriela at her mother’s insistence. She was born in Pont-Audemer, Eure, France. Casta’s mother, Line Blin, is from Normandy. Her father, Dominique Casta, is from Corsica. She has an older brother, Jean-Baptiste, and a younger sister, Marie-Ange. She spent her childhood in Normandy and Noisy-le-Grand (France).

On October 19, 2001, she gave birth to her daughter, Sahteene. The father is her former boyfriend Stéphane Sednaoui. Casta is engaged to Italian actor Stefano Accorsi. Casta became the focus of a minor controversy when, shortly after being selected to be Marianne, she relocated to London. María Inés Rivero

Rivero was born in Córdoba, Argentina. Her mother enrolled her into a modeling school.

She made her modeling debut at the age of 14, when she worked in a local fashion show.

An agent discovered the now mature stunner at age 16 in her hometown, and one year later, she got another break when she won the preliminary of the Elite Look of the Year contest in Argentina.

Rivero has appeared on the cover of magazines such as ELLE, Glamour, «Harpers Bazaar» and Vogue, and has worked for Victoria’s Secret.

Away from modeling, Ines has also sung a music album entitled Hasta Siempre which contains a hit single about the Argentine-born revolutionary Che Guevara. She also had a brief cameo in the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada.

Yasmeen Ghauri

Ghauri was born in Montreal, Quebec to a Pakistani father, Moin Ghauri, an Imam for the Islamic Community of Quebec, and a German mother, Linda Ghauri.

Early on in her life, Ghauri had a troublesome childhood and was tormented by her classmates at school.

This led her to dissociate from children in her age group and she joined older children in her neighbourhood instead.

Ghauri was reportedly working at a McDonalds restaurant at the age of 17 when she was discovered by Montreal hairdresser and salon owner Joseph Del Tortoon.

At the restaurant, she often turned up dressed in black from head to toe and people described her as having a rebellious nature. Despite this, she was named Employee of the Month.

Soon after her discovery, there was a shift in mentality within the fashion industry, moving from predominantly all-American models to more «ethnic» models, a trend which Ghauri fit with her coffee-coloured skin, brown hair, and brown eyes.

Her father disapproved of her new-found interest and career as a model. He had gotten divorced in 1980 and Ghauri had lived with him until moving to New York City, where she modeled for Versace in 1990. Here she was noticed by the «fashion police», critics and labels alike. She was praised for her poise and an exaggerated walk on the runway.  The New York Times quoted her walk as a «ball-bearing swivel of her hips.» Her appearance on the catwalks prompted part of what is now termed in fashion the «Canadian invasion.»

Ghauri enjoyed fame in the early 1990s after landing her first major cover with Elle in January 1990. Soon after, she became the face of both Chanel and Jil Sander. By the end of 1990, she had appeared on the cover of French Elle in July and December. In September, she graced the catwalk for Gianni Versace’s show in Milan and by the next month she was walking for Chanel, Helmut Lang, Jean Paul Gaultier and Lanvin in Paris. Ghauri has a daughter, Maya, and is active with fund-raising events, the most notable of which has been a charity for saving Germany’s Black Forest.
